Umkumbe Safari Lodge is a small authentic family-friendly lodge situated in the Sabi Sand Private Game Reserve west of the Kruger National Park. Umkumbe Safari Lodge offers air conditioned comfortable en-suite rooms with patios overlooking the Sand Riverbed. Umkumbe is also ideal to be booked exclusively by families or small groups travelling together.
Umkumbe, meaning "the rhino", is a rustic lodge located in the Sabi Sand adjacent to the Kruger National Park. Comfortable rooms with bathrooms provide the perfect base for open games drives in Big 5 territory with qualified rangers and trackers.
The lodge is situated in the Sabi Sand Private Reserve, between Mala Mala and Londolozi, an area that offers the greatest diversity of wildlife in Africa. With no fences between the Sabi Sand Wildtuin and Kruger National Park, the game viewing is spectacular. Experience this wildlife on guided walks and game drives under the guidance of an experienced ranger guide
Additional facilities include a swimming pool, lounge, bar and dining area and the traditional boma, where guests will be served delicious and hearty South African meals.
The focus at the lodge is of the view of the seasonal Sand River, and for obvious reasons. Almost daily guests are treated to sightings of various animals grazing in the riverbed. The main lodge area consists of a lounge area, swimming pool with decking, as well an open air dining area and bar. All facilities have wonderful views of the riverbed.
The lodge consists of six chalets / rooms with most overlook the Sand River. Guests regularly see elephants, hippos, buffalo and antelope grazing in the river bed.
Five of the chalets have en-suite bathrooms (with showers) and one has an en-suite bathroom with both a shower and bath. Two of the chalets are connected via an inter-leading door, offering families the perfect accommodation set up. All rooms have twin or double beds and all have mosquito nets. Most of the chalets have a small verandah with camping chairs, and with views of the Sand River.
The reserve is home to the 'Big Five' (elephant, rhino, lion, leopard and buffalo), as well as cheetah, wild dog and hundreds of other species of animals, birds and plants indigenous to the area. The phrase "Big Five" was coined by hunters of yesteryear - before the advent of the photographic safari - and refers to the animals considered the most dangerous to hunt. Umkumbe Safari Lodge offers guests exciting photographic safaris, and there is no better destination to photograph lions and leopards than the Sabi Sand Private Game Reserve.
Expert rangers will ensure that your safari experience is truly memorable. Each day begins with an early morning safari game drive. In the late afternoon guests head out on another game drive and return after dark, offering guests exhilarating night game drives as well! Optional bush walks are offered every day after breakfast / brunch
